Editing list item values

Five columns in the List window support direct editing of their values. To make a value editable, click the text you wish to edit.

Name

When a name is placed into editing mode, the extension is not initially selected to simplfy changing the base name. The Tab key toggles between selecting the base part of the name and the extension.

Type

Creator

Note that file types and creators are always exactly four characters. The editing field won’t allow more than four and the new value will be discarded if you attempt to use fewer than four characters.

Permissions

This field expects a string of the form “rwxrwxrwx”, with unwanted permissions replaced by hyphens to get strings such as “rw-r--r--”. You can also open a contextual menu for the editing field from which you can choose from a variety of common permission settings.

Comment

There are no special restrictions or behaviors for this column.

To confirm a change, use the Enter key.

To confirm a change and advance to the next item in the list, use the Return key.

To cancel editing and leave the current value unchanged, use the Esc key or press Command-period.

If a column is not currently visible, you can add it with the Add Column button at the right end of the column headings.
